On Friday, May 9, the Puebla Attorney General’s Office reported the search of several properties in the Cuautempan and Ahuacatlán areas, where they seized drugs, firearms, live ammunition, and vehicles.
Preliminary reports indicate that the homes seized by authorities belong to Gerardo Cortés Caballero, mayor of Cuautempan, Puebla, who was reelected in the last election.
Authorities requested a search warrant after receiving several reports of illegal activities taking place at the properties: charges to merchants ranging from 200 to 500 pesos to allow them to work, storage of stolen merchandise from transporters, and drug sales and distribution.
The operation was carried out in coordination with members of the state Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), and the Navy (Semar).
The properties and evidence were placed at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office while the investigation continues to determine their nature and identify those responsible for these activities.
Where is the mayor of Cuautempan?
Gerardo Cortés Caballero was not arrested on the day of the operation, and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
However, Samuel Agilar Pala, Secretary of the Interior of Puebla, reported that the mayor of Cuautempan has requested leave for the next 20 days. The official did not confirm whether Cortés Caballero is a fugitive from justice following the findings of Friday, May 9, but asked to wait for authorities to report on the results of the investigation.
Who is Gerardo Cortés Caballero, Mayor of Cuautempan?
Gerardo Cortés, 40, participated in the previous election under the auspices of the coalition “Continue Making History in Puebla,” made up of the Labor Party and the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).
Mayor Cortés holds a degree in production processes from the Technological University of Tlaxcala, according to the National Registry of Professionals.
His family reportedly owns a business in the municipality, which he actively participated in during his youth and allowed him to “understand and connect with the people” of the region.
His father was a candidate for mayor in the 2018 elections, and Gerardo Cortés Caballero joined his campaign as coordinator. However, it wasn’t until 2021 that he decided to run for office and was elected for the first time. He then participated again in the 2024 elections and won again.
