Morena Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña proposed the possibility of temporarily relocating the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, to the state of Jalisco to address the violence crisis affecting the region.
During a press conference in Guadalajara, the legislator emphasized that this measure could replicate the results achieved in Guanajuato, where García Harfuch’s presence has contributed to a significant decrease in homicide rates.
According to Fernández Noroña, the security situation in Jalisco is alarming and requires greater coordination between local and federal authorities.
The senator emphasized that, although the federal government has provided support to the extent of its powers, the primary responsibility rests with state authorities.
“The violence in Jalisco is brutal; it’s been going on for a while. Local governments are responsible: the mayor of Teuchitlán is in prison, the prosecutor is responsible, the governor is responsible,” the legislator declared, emphasizing that local authorities must assume their role in resolving this problem.
The senator also referred to the recent murder of Teocaltiche councilwoman Cecilia Ruvalcaba, who was attacked by three men inside the community hospital where she worked. This case, along with other episodes of violence in municipalities like Teuchitlán, demonstrates the seriousness of the situation in the state.
Fernández Noroña insisted that coordination between the different levels of government is essential to restoring peace to the residents of Jalisco.
Regarding García Harfuch’s possible intervention, the senator explained that his temporary transfer to Jalisco could be an effective strategy to foster collaboration between authorities and achieve concrete results in terms of security.
“I’m not suggesting that this will happen, but perhaps it will: that García Harfuch will come and live here for a while to force the necessary steps toward coordination and results,” he said.
Fernández Noroña also left open the possibility of establishing a dialogue with the governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus Navarro, to discuss joint strategies to address the security crisis. According to the senator, it is essential that political differences not interfere with the search for solutions to the problems affecting the population.
“There should be no partisan use of the issue; resolving Jalisco’s security problems is a priority because it is in an extremely delicate situation,” he stated.
The legislator emphasized that the federal government is willing to collaborate in whatever is necessary to improve security in the state, but reiterated that local authorities must take a more active role.
“The federal government insists on its part, and I believe the state government must make a greater effort,” he declared.
Fernández Noroña’s visit to Guadalajara also aimed to promote the judicial elections, as part of the informational meetings that will be held this Sunday.
During his speech, the senator reiterated his commitment to the security of Jalisco and assured that every effort will be made to support the state in this area.
