Mexico City, a place steeped in architectural beauty, archaeological sites, and museums, has been named one of the world’s best cultural destinations for 2024. To celebrate its rich heritage, the Mexico City Ministry of Culture announced free guided tours on Sundays in May to various locations in the capital.

The Historical Walks program, launched in 1985, aims to strengthen the identity of local residents and promote the preservation of their traditions, customs, and historical memory. Each tour lasts between 60 and 150 minutes and is led by a multidisciplinary team of cultural heritage specialists, historians, archaeologists, architects, and art historians.

Throughout the year, between 42 and 44 tours are organized, with an average attendance of 300 people per Sunday. These tours cover archaeological sites, historic buildings, religious sites, museums, parks, and plazas.

One of the routes included in these free walks is “Renewing the Universe. Huizachtepetl and the Mexica, the New Fire Ceremony” in Iztapalapa, a place steeped in history with over a thousand years of history. This tour allows visitors to visit the archaeological site of Cerro de la Estrella and the New Fire Museum, one of the most important sites for the Mexica.
