Guanajuato’s Secretary of Health, Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, confirmed the first case of measles in the state. The case involves a 13-year-old boy originally from the municipality of León.

Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, Guanajuato’s Secretary of Health, commented that there is ongoing epidemiological surveillance in all 46 municipalities.
He clarified that the child is now asymptomatic; however, the corresponding epidemiological cordon was carried out to intentionally search for cases, but no other probable cases have been confirmed at this time.

“Suspected symptoms, probable symptoms, or symptoms that led us to believe it could be a probable case of measles were identified. The corresponding samples were taken, and the necessary measures were taken to conduct an epidemiological cordon and prevent further cases.”

According to figures from the León Citizen Observatory (OCL), through the Federal Ministry of Health, the number of poisoned children ranged from 1 to 17 years old.

He explained that this epidemiological cordon was implemented both at his school, where classes were suspended only for the young man’s classroom, and also at his home and even the neighborhood, to expand the search and avoid health risks.

“Only in the classroom, as a precautionary measure, to check the vaccination records of the children and the school staff, but a vaccination cordon is also being implemented to determine how the people who live around the area and potential contacts are protected.”

He added that parents reported that he has a complete vaccination schedule, including those for children between one and six years of age.

Regarding vaccination coverage, Gabriel Cortés said that it is above 95 percent statewide, and in the case of León, it is at 98 percent, and in the population group from one year to six years of age, it is at 100 percent.

We’re doing very well; this will help us have a better response and protection capacity against this highly contagious disease.

The state official noted that the national immunization week was held, which greatly helped protect the population, as the target for vaccination was even exceeded by 15 percent.

Finally, he emphasized that they will continue with the immunization efforts, as they are ongoing and the positive results help to eliminate epidemiological risks in Guanajuato.
