Confidence that the closure will not be extended
Authorities are confident that the measure will not be extended beyond what was expected, while new measures are implemented to stem the spread of the screwworm.
López Morales explained that if the restriction is limited to 15 days, there will be no major complications. Currently, around 2,000 head of cattle were being exported per week. In the meantime, the cattle will return to their places of origin and remain in the export pens.
Overcrowded pens
The official noted that many producers already had overcrowded pens and were hoping to sell a larger number of calves, even at a lower price, due to the difficult economic situation. The goal was to raise funds to purchase supplemental feed.
To date, nearly 40,000 head of cattle have been exported this season, and the number is expected to reach 60,000. Until now, they considered the process to be progressing well before this interruption.
No cases, but no risk
Although the presence of the screwworm has not been detected in Durango, the state is not exempt from the risk of contagion, so it is essential to maintain collaboration with health authorities.
This had already been warned.
López Morales mentioned that, during the recent binational meeting held in Aguascalientes eight days ago, the possibility of pausing exports was already being warned about.
“As a state, we will maintain constant communication with federal authorities, so that it truly only lasts 15 days or even less,” he stated.
He recalled that the implementation of the previous health protocol, at the end of 2024, was an agile process, so they are confident that a prompt reactivation will be achieved this time as well. Hopefully, it will be a minimal modification.
Support for producers
Regarding support for producers, the head of the SAGDR reported that he is about to launch a food supplement distribution program, which will be key in the coming months.
“May and June are the most challenging periods due to weather conditions: lack of water in the pastures, scarcity of grass, among other factors. With the supplement, the cattle can maintain better condition,” he concluded.
