Searching mothers denounced the persistent indifference shown by the Oaxaca government, led by Morena’s Salomón Jara Cruz, to finding the whereabouts of their missing loved ones. The advocacy organization Consortium for Parliamentary Dialogue and Equity even reported that 915 women have been reported missing since the beginning of this administration.

Yesterday morning, some 60 members of collectives held a march that started at the monument to La Madre in the state capital, advanced along Madero Street, and continued along Independencia Avenue toward the main square.

Demands for the creation of a specialized prosecutor’s office in Oaxaca

At a rally, they demanded the search for their relatives and the creation of a specialized prosecutor’s office for missing persons. This position, they explained, has been included in the state law on the matter since 2019; however, to date, it has not been implemented.

They stated that the Jara Cruz administration has not allocated a budget for its creation and operation, thus making it unable to function, which affects the investigation of disappearances in the state.

A mother reported that she tried to bring the issue of her daughter’s disappearance to the government palace, where authorities insist it is a space for the people. However, when she tried to enter, security personnel prevented her from doing so.

She indicated that she only wanted to present her case to the Secretary of Government, Jesús Romero, but instead, minor officials were sent who only listened but did nothing.

The collectives also maintain that disappearances are increasing in the state of Oaxaca without any clear actions to address this problem.

Representatives from the Mixteca, Costa, Valles Centrales, and Isthmus of Tehuantepec regions (four of the eight in the state) also agreed on this point, and these regions are considered the most dangerous due to the number of missing persons.
