The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) seized five protected wild birds, a scarlet macaw and four parrots, that were being sold illegally in the city center. The vendor was arrested and handed over to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

A citizen complaint led to the rescue.

The operation was carried out following an anonymous report about the illegal sale of wildlife. Profepa agents, with support from municipal police, found a vendor with the animals locked in cardboard boxes, in deplorable conditions.

During the inspection, it was found that the scarlet macaw, a species protected by NOM-059 and the international CITES convention, had serious health problems: mutilated tail feathers and no legal identification.

The General Wildlife Law prohibits the capture and sale of these birds (parakeets, macaws, and parrots) unless it is for conservation projects or scientific research. The vendor now faces administrative and criminal proceedings.

Authorities asked the public to report these types of environmental crimes.
