Construction of the Tampico viaduct, or second level of road, could begin at the end of this year, with an initial investment of around six billion pesos, out of the total estimated cost of 15 billion pesos. It will be awarded under a concession, so there will be a recovery fee.
This was announced by Mayor Mónica Zacil Villarreal Anaya after a meeting in Ciudad Victoria with Américo Villarreal Anaya, Governor of the State.
The city governor stated that this road infrastructure project is part of an ambitious plan to improve mobility in southern Tamaulipas.
“We went to Ciudad Victoria to discuss the project. The State Governor summoned us, and it appears it will begin at the end of this year,” she said.
Where will the Tampico viaduct begin?
The so-called Tampico viaduct is expected to begin in the northern part of the city and extend to the southern part of Altamira.
“Exactly where the towers are on Tancol Avenue, above Hidalgo Avenue, and it ends 1.4 kilometers before the entrance to Petrocel,” said the mayor.
She specified that the road project will cover 4.5 kilometers and will be under concession, so those who wish to use it will have to pay a recovery fee.
The main objective is to streamline vehicle traffic and reduce travel times in one of the most congested areas in southern Tamaulipas.
“They have already conducted many studies and determined the flow of vehicles; they told us that around 72,000 vehicles travel along that section. That’s specifically why it’s being built for 4.5 kilometers, to ease traffic in the lower part… it would only be in the northern area. That’s the first phase,” she indicated.

To avoid impacting roadways, work will be carried out at night.
She emphasized that, in addition to the vehicle infrastructure, the project includes a pedestrian section, which will ensure safe access for those traveling on foot.
“This project will have an investment of 15 billion pesos and seeks to integrate a complete mobility solution that addresses all sectors of the population.”
Mónica Villarreal Anaya emphasized that the viaduct will be built by elevating the road on stilts, without impacting current traffic or removing bus stops.
They will not be modified; the median strip is still there, and, depending on its size, the stilts over which the viaduct will pass will be raised.
Mónica Villarreal, Mayor
To avoid impacting roadways during the day, construction work will be carried out primarily at night.
The mayor emphasized that this project joins other large-scale projects for Tamaulipas, such as the Tampico-Mante highway and the Tula-Ocampo route, which already has 22 bridges along its route.
“We are seeing these large-scale projects in our state that are evidence that the transformation is underway,” said Mónica Villarreal, stating that the long-awaited Tampico viaduct will provide a major boost to the southern region of Tamaulipas.
