The Yucatán region is experiencing a surge in insect populations due to the scorching heat and high humidity, according to Julián García Rejón, head of the Arbovirology Laboratory at the Dr. Hideyo Noguchi Regional Research Center at the Autonomous University of Yucatán.
Flies, in particular, are posing a significant health risk, as they can transmit viruses and bacteria that cause diseases such as diarrhea and cholera.
García Rejón explained that heat accelerates insects’ metabolism, leading to rapid reproduction. Mosquitoes, for instance, can complete their life cycle in stagnant water found in flowerpots, vases, or animal waterers.
Even if the water is changed, fly and mosquito eggs persist on the container walls and continue to develop. These insects also reproduce in decomposing organic matter, such as food scraps, damp areas, muddy water, and contaminated food.
“This can pose a significant health risk, especially during hot seasons,” García Rejón warned.
A single fly can lay more than 100 eggs, which cannot be considered pests since they are part of the animal food chain. However, their proliferation can be prevented through simple measures.
García Rejón suggested keeping water containers covered and clean, frequently changing water in flower vases and animal bowls, not leaving garbage outdoors, properly closing bags, protecting food inside the house, using insect repellent and crinolines, and calling pest control services if an excess of insects is present.
“It’s essential to be aware of prevention,” García Rejón emphasized. “Health begins at home; we must prevent insects from having the conditions to reproduce and thus prevent diseases.”
The expert also warned that no one is exempt from getting sick from food contamination caused by insects such as flies, cockroaches, etc.
Prevention Tips:
– Keep water containers covered and clean
– Frequently change water in flower vases and animal bowls
– Don’t leave garbage outdoors
– Properly close bags
– Protect food inside the house
– Use insect repellent and crinolines
– Call pest control services if an excess of insects is present
By taking these simple steps, residents can reduce the risk of insect-borne diseases and create a safer environment for themselves and their families.
