This Wednesday, May 14, a highway accident occurred in the municipality of Tehuacán, in the state of Puebla, involving three vehicles, leaving at least 21 people dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca Highway, at kilometer 31. A Volvo 9700 bus from the AU line, a truck, and a personal transport van collided.
Unofficial reports shared by Diario Cambio indicate that the truck was allegedly speeding, veering into the opposite lane and colliding head-on with a van transporting workers to Mexico City.
After the accident, it also struck the side of an AU passenger bus, trapping several passengers. After the incident, the truck fell into a ravine and caught fire.
Puebla’s Secretary of the Interior, Samuel Aguilar Pala, reported that the accident was attended to by emergency services with support from the state and federal General Coordination of Civil Protection, members of the National Guard (GN), the Ministry of Public Security, SUMA, and the Federal Roads and Bridges of Revenue and Related Services.
He also detailed that as a preliminary result of the accident, 18 people died at the scene and three more died while receiving medical attention at the hospital.
Regarding the injured, the secretary did not provide an exact number, but confirmed that they received timely medical attention from emergency services.
Due to the events, the federal highway was closed to traffic in both directions to carry out rescue efforts.
Relatives of those killed in the accident are asking the Smart Transporter Tourism Corporation for support to cover funeral and medical expenses, which was later confirmed by their legal representatives at a press conference.
Minutes later, representatives of the transportation company, which was the third party involved in the accident, reported that the company will be responsible for the funeral expenses of those killed in the accident and will also handle the paperwork for transporting the bodies from Puebla to their homes.
Of the 20 people on board the transportation unit, they reported that they had confirmed a preliminary death toll of 15, including the driver.
