Of the 173 hurricanes that have formed in the Pacific Ocean between 1950 and 2024, eight have caused damage in Nayarit, although only four made direct landfall in the state. This was stated by Hugo Segura, technical director of the National Water Commission (Conagua) in Nayarit, who noted that the state has increased its exposure to hydrometeorological phenomena in recent years.
“Only four have hit Nayarit, while Sinaloa has had 32,” Segura explained. However, he clarified that the relationship between the two states generates indirect effects: “the water they leave behind comes down the rivers and returns to us as rain.”
According to historical records, hurricanes Naomi (1968), Lidia (1993), Kena (2002), and Roslyn (2022) made landfall in the state, while others such as Rosa, Patricia, Willa, and Pamela caused damage without direct impact.
Conagua emphasized that the months of September and October represent the most dangerous period for the formation of tropical cyclones in the region.
By 2025, the formation of between 16 and 20 meteorological phenomena is expected in the Pacific: between 8 and 9 tropical storms, 4 to 5 hurricanes of categories 1 and 2, and 4 to 6 intense hurricanes (categories 3, 4, or 5), according to the forecast of the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
This agency, which reports to Conagua, warns that rising sea temperatures and conditions typical of the El Niño phenomenon could lead to a more active season. Therefore, the population is urged to remain attentive to official warnings, review evacuation routes, and strengthen emergency preparedness.
“Previously, the percentage of impacts was lower; now, it has increased due to the impacts of recent years,” added Hugo Segura, also highlighting that Sinaloa and Baja California Sur continue to be the states hardest hit by these phenomena.
Authorities reiterate that, even without direct impact, the effects of hurricanes can spread across the country and bodies of water, making it necessary to maintain active prevention plans throughout the country.
