What’s happening in Mexico with officials co-opted or complicit in organized crime is a disaster, as revealed by Operation Swarm, the mayor of Puebla who fled, the arrest of the mayor of Teuchitlán for the events at Rancho Izaguirre, and the murder of a candidate in Veracruz, among others. This panorama includes the recent revocation of visas for the mayor of Matamoros and the acting governor of Baja California, who simply claims it’s gender violence, journalist Héctor de Mauleón noted.
In the program “Así las Cosas” with Gabriela Warkentin, the columnist recalled that 10 years ago, a man was detained at Tijuana customs carrying a million dollars from “El Chapo” in a shipment he had been making every month since 2011, accumulating around 24 million dollars in trafficking. The customs administrator at the time was the governor’s brother-in-law, Luis Alfonso Torres Torres, and “that’s when doubts began to arise as to whether customs was colluding with El Chapo’s activities.”
He also mentioned that at the end of March, one of the journalists attending the morning press conference mentioned the governor’s brother-in-law when pointing to a group of extortionists operating out of customs, along with Baltazar Terrazas.
Regarding Mauleón, he shared that for at least four years, there has been a US investigation into the financing of political campaigns of various governors and mayors with money from the huchicol scheme handled in Tamaulipas by Sergio Cardona, who was murdered in a barbershop. One of his brothers fled to the United States to seek refuge, and the investigation was launched at that time.
In that investigation, he said, “the links between Morena politicians and Sergio Carmona were mentioned, who allegedly received campaign money. Since then, mention has been made of Rubén Rocha, Américo Villarreal, Marina del Pilar Ávila, the governor of Baja California, Mario Delgado, and Ricardo Peralta, when he was undersecretary of the interior and who had been in charge of customs.” Therefore, the governor has said that this is a situation related to her husband.
There is secrecy from the United States and “desperation” from the Mexican government, which is a bystander to events such as the surrender of “El Chapo’s” family. Therefore, he anticipated that “something very big is brewing that will explode at any moment, and the first signs are the withdrawal of visas,” the journalist noted.
