In a sustained offensive against organized crime, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) has made significant progress in combating cartels and their illicit activities. Between October 1, 2024, and May 16, 2025, naval forces have detected and dismantled 57 clandestine laboratories, eradicated over 420 marijuana and poppy plantations, and arrested thousands of individuals linked to criminal organizations.

The Special Operations Unit (UNOPES) played a crucial role in locating and destroying hidden laboratories in rural areas of Sinaloa, Durango, and Nayarit. These facilities, many of them linked to notorious cells such as “Los Mayos” and “Los Chapitos,” housed massive amounts of illicit substances.

According to official reports, naval forces seized over 10,563 kilograms of marijuana, 1,150 kilograms of fentanyl, 36,434 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 364 tons of chemical precursors used to produce synthetic drugs. Additionally, authorities confiscated 1,974 weapons, 1,324 grenades and explosives, and numerous vehicles linked to criminal activities.

UNOPES, in coordination with naval intelligence and control units, led joint actions that resulted in the arrest of 6,939 people and the seizure of more than 2,300 vehicles. The use of naval aircraft and unmanned aerial surveillance enabled authorities to identify numerous marijuana plantations in towns such as Santa Gertrudis, San Rafael, El Maguey, and Rancho Doroteo.

In total, 115 marijuana plantations were eradicated, with over 4.8 million plants spread across nearly 260,000 square meters. Moreover, 307 poppy fields containing more than 40 million plants were destroyed, covering an area of over 1.7 million square meters.

At the maritime level, SEMAR reported the seizure of 37,340 kilograms of cocaine, the arrest of 190 people, and the confiscation of 49 vessels, including a low-profile vessel used to evade radar. Authorities also seized 125 outboard motors, more than 86,000 liters of fuel, and numerous other assets linked to illicit activities.

SEMAR’s Success Story: A Major Blow to Cartels

The Mexican Navy’s efforts have dealt a significant blow to organized crime, disrupting the supply chains of cartels and their ability to produce and distribute illicit substances. This sustained offensive against cartels has led to the dismantling of 57 clandestine laboratories, the eradication of over 420 marijuana and poppy plantations, and the arrest of thousands of individuals linked to criminal organizations.

SEMAR’s success is a testament to its commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring the safety and security of Mexican communities.
