A controversy has erupted over a viral video created by popular YouTuber MrBeast, featuring his visit to several archaeological sites in Mexico, including Calakmul, Chichen Itzá, and Balamcanché. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) had granted permission for the production, but the Ministry of Culture has announced plans to sanction the creator due to “improper use” of the spaces.
Governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores, defended MrBeast in a statement on her official X account, saying that his team acted with “absolute responsibility and respect” when filming at the archaeological sites. She also expressed gratitude for the economic benefits generated by the video for local communities and the promotion of tourism.
“This is not the first time this has happened, and things have always been clarified,” Sansores said. “Of course, we don’t agree, and of course there will be the corresponding sanctions because that’s not what those spaces are for.”
However, Sansores took issue with the Ministry of Culture’s decision to sue MrBeast, suggesting that any lawsuit should be directed at the Campeche State Government instead.
“If there is any disagreement on the part of the Ministry of Culture, we ask that they direct their concerns to the Campeche State Government, as we assume the responsibility of showing the world the cultural and natural wealth that defines us,” she said.
Sansores also highlighted the benefits brought by MrBeast’s visit, including the exposure of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage to a global audience. The video has generated over 56 million views in just four days, with more than 394 million subscribers on YouTube.
“This material was produced with respect and professionalism,” Sansores said. “I am surprised that, on the other hand, the Ministry of Culture wants to sanction the production for its adaptations for an international youth and children’s audience, which are typical characteristics of visual literature.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum had previously stated that if permits were violated, sanctions would apply. However, she also called for a thorough investigation into how the recordings were made and what permits were granted.
The controversy surrounding MrBeast’s video has sparked intense debate on social media, with some praising his efforts to promote Mexico’s archaeological sites and others criticizing the decision to allow restricted areas access.
“This is incredible that the government lets us in here,” one commenter wrote. “But in a bad way, hahaha.”
“I didn’t see anything out of place; on the contrary, the guy was quite respectful,” another said. “The video is entertaining and educational. I see it more as an excellent tourist promotion.”
Ultimately, the fate of MrBeast’s lawsuit remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the viral video has put Mexico’s cultural heritage in the spotlight for millions around the world to enjoy.
