Punishment cells reopen at the Sonora Regional Museum

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) carried out the second reopening of the so-called punishment cells at the Regional Museum of Sonora, known as the old penitentiary.

From early morning, hundreds of Hermosillo residents gathered to wait for the opportunity to see the interior of this historic building.

Martha Olivia Solís Zatarain, director of the Regional Museum, explained that this was an activity in commemoration of International Museum Day, which was celebrated this Sunday.

“These spaces will remain for posterity; they are a legacy of Sonora’s history that we must share with the people,” she stated.

She explained that, on this occasion, the tour took place in two cells, which at one time had a capacity of up to 16 inmates, where there was no lighting, but there was a bathroom.

According to Solís Zatarain, these cells were supposedly no longer used for this purpose until 1915; however, he said there are records that they were still in use in the 1950s.
