Putla de Guerrero. – Cutberto Hernández García, a teacher and coach of the “Barefoot Mountain Children” of the Triqui people, was murdered with a firearm in the municipal seat of Putla de Guerrero, in the Southern Sierra of Oaxaca. This makes two coaches killed by violence.
Cutberto Hernández was an indigenous primary school teacher and coach of the “Barefoot Mountain Children” and a member of the Triqui Unification and Struggle Movement (MULT). “Cutberto Hernández García, known as Timon, was only dedicated to promoting basketball and advancing the future children of the Triqui region,” according to the social media accounts of various basketball clubs.
The events occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, on Lázaro Cárdenas Highway, between Oaxaca Street and the federal highway, in Putla. After the incident, security and emergency services responded to the scene following reports of gunshots, but Cutberto had already died.
Coach Cutberto was originally from the Triqui Baja community, located 30 minutes from San Miguel Copala, in the municipality of Putla.
The murder occurs six months after another coach, Rigoberto Martínez Sandoval, 34, was killed after being shot several times outside the “President Lázaro Cárdenas” Experimental Teacher Training School, also located in the municipal seat of Putla, Guerrero.
The Ministry of Justice demands justice and a prompt and expeditious investigation; 37 unsolved murders are reported.
In light of the murder of coach Cutberto, the Triqui Unification and Struggle Movement demands a prompt and expeditious investigation to clarify and arrest the perpetrators and masterminds of the murder.
“The impunity and collusion between the various agencies responsible for security is evident. The irresponsibility of the State Attorney General’s Office is reprehensible. It only gives the families who demand justice for their victims a run for their money. This Attorney General’s Office turns a deaf ear to the accusations,” the organization stated, noting that with the death of Professor Cutberto, the number of unsolved murders of its members has reached 37 since 2022.
Furthermore, the organization emphasized that there is a security emergency in the municipality of Putla, “due to the lack of commitment on the part of the municipal and state police. We demand the intervention of the state government and a cleanup of public servants (state and municipal police) colluding with criminals.”
