A young woman from the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, and a young man from San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca, were the fatalities of the accident that occurred Saturday night when the training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

The accident left two dead and 20 injured, 11 of whom are in critical condition and an undetermined number have been released.

In Veracruz, friends of cadet América Yamileth Sánchez, 21, a member of the Heroic Naval Military School, expressed their sorrow on social media over her death.

They indicated that the young woman had shared images of her stay in New York on social media.

The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle García, extended her condolences to the family: “All my love, support, and solidarity to her family. My gratitude to @SEMAR_mx and my wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured. Veracruz is with you.”

On Sunday afternoon, it was reported that the parents of cadet América Yamileth Sánchez had traveled to the United States. The victim’s mother, Rocío, and her father, Cosme, will travel to New York so that, once the legal procedures are completed, they can return with their daughter’s body to Xalapa, their hometown.

In Oaxaca, the population of San Mateo del Mar awoke in confusion and sadness upon learning of the death of one of its young sailors, Adal Jair Marcos, who was traveling on the training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc.

According to various sources, the young sailor was born in the Ikoot community of San Mateo del Mar.

Municipal President Raúl Rangel González confirmed the death of Adal Jair Marcos and stated that he personally went to offer his condolences to the family.

The commander of the 10th Naval Region of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), Carlos Jiménez Leal, contacted the municipal trustee and confirmed that Adal Jair Marcos lost his life after the sailboat collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.

“With so much technology at hand, it’s hard for me to believe it was an accident due to some kind of fault. That’s why I ask that the authorities investigate what happened and, if anyone is responsible, that they be punished,” said one of the local residents, while asking that Adal’s family not be left helpless.

According to family members, Adal Jair Marcos’s parents left Sunday morning for New York to complete the necessary identification and transport procedures for their relative’s body.

Before beginning its Bicentennial Training Cruise of the Consolidation of Independence at Sea, the training ship Cuauhtémoc was at the naval facilities in Salina Cruz during the first week of March of this year for repairs.
