In Baja California Sur’s main tourist destination, the smell of gunpowder is palpable after the war between “La Chapiza” and “La Mayiza” erupted for control of the territory.
And it’s no wonder.
The outcome of this struggle in just the last 24 hours is truly worrying.
- One dead
- Two injured
- One person illegally deprived of liberty.
Almost out of the blue, the U.S. Consulate and Embassy issued a travel alert urging their fellow citizens to avoid visiting Los Cabos and La Paz, due to the unstoppable spiral of violence sweeping the state.
The first violent incident was reported at 10:57 p.m. on May 19, when two men arrived at the IMSS clinic in Cabo San Lucas with gunshot wounds.
The victims, identified as Antonio “N” and Luis Aldair “N,” got out of a Hyundai Elantra and were informed that another person was apparently dead in the passenger seat.
Medical personnel exited the vehicle and went to the car. After assessing the male, they confirmed he had no vital signs.
For this reason, the Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) was requested, and an investigation was opened.
Officers from the State Criminal Investigation Agency (AEIC) and personnel from the Forensic Services Directorate cordoned off the vehicle and processed the crime scene.
The body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for a legal autopsy.
Almost six hours later, at around 5:00 a.m. on May 20, the illegal deprivation of liberty of a male was reported.
The kidnapping occurred on Isla Bonaire Street in the Caribe neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas, when an armed group of men arrived and broke into a home after breaking down the front door.
The criminals, dressed in tactical gear and armed with long weapons, forcibly removed a man of approximately 50 years of age.
After beating him, he was forced into a white RAM pickup truck, escorted by at least three other vehicles.
The unlawful deprivation of the victim’s liberty was reported by a family member through the emergency number 911.
