Eight years had to pass before the return of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) to the country finally became a reality on May 22, 2025, with the start of the MÉXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba.

The tournament, which takes place at the iconic El Camaleón golf course, marks a new era for the sport in Mexico. Fans will be able to see the world’s best golfers, such as South Korean Kim Sei-Young, the most recent LPGA champion in Mexico, who is one of the 144 players present at the magnificent sporting event, along with eight Mexican players who will be in the field.

This will also be an opportunity to create an ecosystem for new generations of golfers, emphasized the organizers of GT Sports Management. To this end, the XUNTAS organization has several young women preparing for major international tournaments, who could eventually have the opportunity to participate and make their home debut in an LPGA tournament. The event also aims to provide girls between the ages of 12 and 14 with the full experience, not only seeing their idols but also receiving tips to improve their game.

This is the case with former Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa, who is teaching several clinics at the MÉXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, primarily aimed at clients of a renowned bank.

For the country, hopes for good results lie with Gaby López, a player from the capital. Despite having a difficult session on the first day of her participation in the tournament and placing 115th, she hopes to recover. Meanwhile, María Fassi from Hidalgo was the highest-ranked player at the close of the first day of activities, finishing 63rd.

Beyond the satisfaction and adrenaline generated among fans when watching national players compete, the return of the LPGA is undoubtedly a great moment for Mexico, as this tournament is expected to remain at Mayakoba for at least five years, and the intention is to bring more sporting events from this women’s association to the country.
