Tourism service providers in Tulum warned that the current low season is shaping up to be one of the worst in decades, with a significant decline in visitor numbers and the closure of businesses as a direct consequence.
Alejandro Torres, a local tour guide, stated that the low demand is not exclusive to Tulum, but rather affects several destinations in Quintana Roo, where atypical behavior is observed for this time of year. “It’s the worst season we’ve seen in many years. Businesses are closing, and tourist arrivals are minimal, both domestic and international,” he stated.
Among the factors that could be influencing this phenomenon, the guide mentioned the massive presence of sargassum on the beaches and the international economic uncertainty, particularly stemming from the policies of United States President Donald Trump, which could be affecting the confidence of the US market, the main source of tourists to the region.
The situation has generated concern among tourism sector workers, who face not only a drop in income but also a possible reduction in work hours due to the lack of activity.
Torres called on authorities and the business sector to strengthen tourism promotion strategies and create conditions for a recovery in the short term, especially with summer approaching.
