The Mérida City Council has marked Pride Month with the launch of its “Mérida Diversa” program, aimed at promoting awareness and inclusivity among the city’s LGBTIQ+ community. The initiative is part of a new department focused on inclusion and diversity within the municipal government.

According to Edgar Moo Montalvo, Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator for the Mérida City Council, the goal of the “Diversa Mérida at Your University” program is to engage with local universities and promote awareness about LGBTIQ+ issues. The initiative has already been introduced at several institutions, including the Universidad de Puerto Rico and the Escuela de Enfermería.

The program will feature a range of activities, including painting pedestrian crossings, an inclusion and diversity job fair, a forestry crusade, and a rainbow expo, among others. More information about the full program can be found on the city’s website at merida.gob.mx/meridadiversa.

“We want to close out the month-long celebration with the lighting of the Municipal Palace in the colors of the LGBT flag on June 28th,” said Moo Montalvo, “as a way to honor the struggle and activism of collectives for the rights of sexual diversity.”

The coordinator extended an invitation to the LGBTIQ+ community to participate in these initiatives and contribute to promoting inclusivity within the city.
