The Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) was founded in 1974 in Mexico City. It is a public university and enjoys high prestige in both Mexico and Latin America. Its core values include a deep connection to the social and human environment. As an autonomous university, the UAM enjoys academic and research freedom.
It currently has five academic units distributed throughout the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico: Azcapotzalco, Cuajimalpa, Iztapalapa, Xochimilco, and Lerma in the State of Mexico. The Autonomous Metropolitan University was the first higher education institution to have the largest number of full-time professors with doctorates. It is also one of the leading research-focused universities in Mexico. It is currently ranked among the 110 institutions with the greatest social impact in the world.
History of the UAM
Following the student movement of 1968, a restructuring of the university system began. For this reason, during President Luis Echeverría’s six-year term, the National Association of Universities and Institutes of Higher Education demanded that the government create a new university for the metropolitan area. Ultimately, the goal was to ensure that the new institutions would not have ties to the student movement.
As a result, on January 1, 1974, the law creating the Autonomous Metropolitan University went into effect, with architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez as its first rector.

Initially, the UAM had three units: Azcapotzalco, Xochimilco, and Iztapalapa. The objective was to decentralize university life and serve the population of peripheral areas. Each of the units was assigned programs by area: Science for the Iztapalapa Unit (UAM-I), Engineering for the Azcapotzalco Unit (UAM-A), and Health for the Xochimilco Unit (UAM-X). However, the offerings were later diversified with the creation of departments within the units, transforming them into interdisciplinary campuses. This feature was innovative compared to higher education faculties at the time.

The last of the units to be built was the Cuajimalpa University. In 2005, the Academic College approved the creation of this unit. Initially, it had temporary facilities, like the Universidad Iberoamericana. Its facilities are currently located on the former grounds of the La Venta Special Forestry and Repopulation Zone of Industrial Forests.
Admission Process
The Autonomous Metropolitan University currently has two selection processes, one in March and the other in September. Applicants to become UAM students must take a knowledge test for each subject area; to do so, registration is required at http://admision.uam.mx/registro/adm_convocatoria.html. Study guides can be purchased at any of the units.
The Azcapotzalco Autonomous University (UAM) opened its doors on November 11, 1974, and offers programs in the following areas: Basic Sciences and Engineering (CBI), Social Sciences and Humanities (CSH), and Sciences and Arts for Design (CyAD).
