By complying with the required standards and regulations, Puerto Vallarta received the international Tree Cities of the World certification, a distinction that only two cities in Jalisco have. The award was presented at the municipal presidency by Laura García Santamaría, coordinator of trees and cities at Reforestamos México, to Lucia Michel, chief administrative officer, representing Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González.

“The Tree Cities of the World award is given to governments committed to caring for and protecting their urban trees,” she stated.

Puerto Vallarta, she said, has met the five required standards, which are: having an authority responsible for caring for trees; standard number two, having regulations and laws that protect them; third, having an inventory; we need to know what we have in order to know how to care for them and how to diagnose them; fourth, having a budget allocated for maintenance and involving citizens in the care and protection of trees.

The Tree Cities of the World award is a program created by the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to recognize cities around the world that have committed to creating and growing green spaces and increasing and maintaining urban trees in their communities.

In 2023, 200 cities worldwide were recognized, 65 of which are in Latin America. Currently, only 67 cities in Mexico have received this certification, two of them in Jalisco, Zapopan, and Puerto Vallarta.
