The first cyclone of this Pacific hurricane season is beginning to form 500 kilometers south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, prompting both Civil Protection and state government authorities to prepare to protect the population from the storm.
According to a statement, the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) warned that a tropical depression or storm, named Alvin, is expected to form Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
It is currently located 500 kilometers south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 525 kilometers south of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, moving west-northwest at 16 kilometers per hour, away from the state’s coast.
However, the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRyPC) indicated that the natural phenomenon could generate moderate to heavy rains over the next few hours, accompanied by electrical activity and gusts of wind, mainly in the Costa Grande, Tierra Caliente, Acapulco, Central, Mountain, Costa Chica, and Northern regions.
Due to the above, and due to the beginning of the rainy season, the Guerrero state government urged citizens to take extreme precautions due to the risk of landslides and mudslides, as well as overflows and flooding in low-lying areas of the state due to rising river and stream levels.
It also indicated that the Beach Promotion Agency is carrying out cleanup work along the entire Guerrero coast and sanitation work, primarily at the mouth of the Río del Camarón and the Aguas Blancas Canal.
