Quintana Roo’s Nuevo Canaán Bridge Rehabilitation Project Makes Steady Progress

State Governor Mara Lezama recently visited the community of Nuevo Canaán to oversee the progress of the rehabilitation project for the bridge connecting this town with Miguel Alemán in Othón P. Blanco municipality. This long-awaited infrastructure improvement aims to provide a reliable and safe passage for residents, who have endured isolation during severe storms.

The old bridge was severely damaged by Hurricane Nadine, prompting years of requests from residents for its repair or replacement. The new bridge features state-of-the-art storm drains, allowing water to flow freely without disrupting roadways. This substantial upgrade addresses the inadequate capacity of the previous infrastructure, which often rendered the road impassable during heavy rainfall.

According to Governor Lezama, “When it rained heavily, this became a dead end. Families were cut off from communication, and that can’t happen again.” The Ministry of Public Works is spearheading the project with support from SEDENA (National Electoral Service). This initiative seeks to provide a long-term solution using high-quality materials and construction techniques designed to enhance durability.

The bridge rehabilitation will benefit approximately 300 residents who rely on this road to access essential services, schools, and health centers. The work involves the installation of causeways, asphalt pavement, and precast concrete caissons.

Governor Lezama emphasized that this project is part of the state’s plan to rebuild and strengthen infrastructure damaged by natural disasters, prioritizing rural communities that have historically been left behind. Unlike previous administrations, she stated that this project is being carried out “with transparency and without corruption.”

While the work is not yet complete, residents are pleased with the progress made so far. The expectation is that the bridge will be finished in the coming weeks before the start of the rainy season, providing a reliable and safe passage for the community.
