The Spirit of Mexico Revives: The Return of the Iconic Tequila Express Train

Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and world-renowned tequila production are once again accessible to tourists on the relaunched Tequila Express train. After a nine-year hiatus, this unique tourist attraction has resumed its journey from Guadalajara to the town of Tequila in Mexico’s Jalisco state.

With “tequila tourism” experiencing a surge in popularity, the Tequila Express offers visitors an immersive experience into the heart of Mexico’s tequila culture. The train’s on-board cocktails and knowledgeable tour guides provide a fascinating blend of entertainment and education.

The original Tequila Express launched in 1997 to cater to the growing demand for “tequila tourism” in Tequila, which has become a thriving hub for the industry with over 25 distilleries. However, after several years of operation, the train ceased running in 2015 due to declining tourist numbers.

Following an investment of around £7 million (170 million pesos) from government authorities and tourism companies, the Tequila Express has been refurbished and relaunched to showcase the best of Mexico’s tequila industry. The revamped carriages now offer a luxurious and comfortable experience, complete with marble-topped bars and tasteful decorations.

As passengers embark on their journey, they are treated to an engaging narrative about Mexico’s rich history and the production process behind its famous spirit. From Nuremberg’s Techno Train to London’s late-night Margate service, one seasoned traveler has witnessed many chaotic railway adventures. However, the Tequila Express is a more refined experience, with no signs of getting messy – at least not before reaching Tequila.

Upon arrival in Tequila, tourists can explore the town’s vibrant culture and rich heritage through various tours and activities. A visit to La Capilla, Tequila’s oldest cantina, provides an unforgettable atmosphere, while distillery tours offer a glimpse into the production process behind Mexico’s most iconic export.

The relaunch of the Tequila Express has been met with enthusiasm from both tourists and locals alike, with over 1.2 million visitors flocking to Tequila annually. As one traveler noted, “Behind every tequila shot is a culture of hard work and farming experience,” highlighting the importance of understanding the industry’s history and heritage.

The Tequila Express runs year-round between Guadalajara and Tequila, offering an unforgettable journey through Mexico’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. With its unique blend of entertainment and education, this iconic train is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who experience it.
