A wave of violence has swept through the municipality of Tulum, leaving two women dead and their families reeling from the senseless killings.

The first incident occurred on Thursday, May 29, around 4:40 p.m. at a beach area near the Ahau Hotel. A 911 emergency call reported a woman injured by gunfire, but when paramedics arrived, they found her lying lifeless on the sand. The victim had sustained at least two gunshot wounds and was later confirmed deceased.

Experts from the State Attorney General’s Office and Forensic Services collected ballistic evidence at the crime scene, while authorities have yet to confirm the victim’s identity or make any arrests.

Just hours later, a second femicide shook the community when neighbors reported hearing gunfire outside a food establishment on Okot Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a dead woman inside a taco stand, with several spent shell casings scattered at the scene. The body was taken for a legal autopsy to determine the cause of death and motive.

A heavy security presence has been deployed in Tulum following the two executions, as authorities work tirelessly to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.

The State Attorney General’s Office issued a statement on its social media regarding the first execution, indicating that preliminary investigations suggest the motive was related to drug dealing. Authorities are working closely with security forces to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of these senseless killings, residents remain in shock and fear for their safety. The recent uptick in violence has left a lasting impact on Tulum’s residents, who demand action from authorities to ensure their protection and security.
