Tourists Defy Airport Transportation Company’s Aggressive Tactics in Cancún

A growing number of tourists have been opting to walk or use ride-sharing services despite aggressive tactics employed by an airport transportation company in Cancún.

At Terminal 2 of the International Airport (AIC), eyewitnesses reported at least two instances of harassment directed towards passengers who declined to use official transportation. Meanwhile, a fleet of platform vehicles flooded the airport premises, attempting to collect passengers.

Many visitors have expressed their dissatisfaction with the high prices charged by the official transportation service. Irena and her husband from Slovenia were among those who refused to pay the steep fee, choosing instead to walk up to a kilometer through the airport’s streets to catch an Uber ride.

“It’s ridiculous to be asked to pay $200 for a trip to our hotel when we can get the same service with Uber for $70,” Irena said. “What bothers us is how they follow us around and try to intimidate us into using their transportation.”

This sentiment was echoed by Shankar, another tourist who arrived in Cancún with his wife. “I’m not going to accept this type of behavior,” he said firmly. “As a visitor, I have the right to choose my own transportation. I’m free to decide how I want to get around the airport.”

Airport officials have been patrolling the grounds to prevent tourists from boarding unauthorized vehicles on the platforms. However, many visitors have found ways to evade these efforts and use ride-sharing services or walk to their destinations.

One couple reported being approached by a person who tried to intimidate them into using official transportation. The driver was allegedly told that they were prohibited from picking up passengers inside the airport, after which he threatened the operator before leaving the two tourists stranded.

The incident highlights concerns over the aggressive tactics employed by some airport transportation companies in Cancún and the need for greater flexibility and freedom of choice for visitors to the city.
