In recognition of sound environmental management, safety, services, water quality, and environmental education, Bahías de Huatulco earned four Blue Flags, one of the most important international certifications.
Excellence in the sustainable management of the bays’ resources was also highlighted: Chahué, Tangolunda, and Santa Cruz, as well as Pescadores Beach.
The head of the Oaxaca Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), Saymi Pineda Velasco, stated that this achievement is the result of coordinated work between the different levels of government, the tourism sector, and civil society, all of whom have placed responsible practices at the center of tourism management, with the goal of ensuring a prosperous future for this destination that will benefit future generations.
He stated that, at the direction of Governor Salomón Jara Cruz, they are working hand in hand with the tourism sector and municipal authorities to continue promoting the destination’s comprehensive and sustainable development, consolidating this industry as a driving force of well-being, positioning Huatulco as a sustainable destination in Mexico.
Blue Flag is an international certification program for beaches and marinas, led by a civil society organization that promotes strategies focused on reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable tourism.
It has the support of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) Tourism Organization, and the Mexican Government’s Secretariats of Tourism (Sectur); Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat); and Navy (Semar); as well as the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), and the National Water Commission (Conagua).
