The modernization project on the Huejutla-Tamazunchale highway, which crosses three municipalities in Hidalgo, will be completed in five years and includes six road corrections, ten bridges, and four interchanges at a total cost of 4.3 billion pesos from the federal government, according to the environmental impact assessment.

This highway, which passes through Huejutla, Jaltocán, and San Felipe Orizatlán in Hidalgo, as well as San Martín Chalchicuautla and Tamazunchale, both in San Luis Potosí, will have an average daily traffic of 3,489 vehicles and a useful life of approximately 50 years, which can be extended indefinitely.

Of the ten bridges included in the highway project, seven will be new and three more are existing structures that will be modernized, according to the document prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).

Therefore, the bridges to be built are located at kilometer 13+260, which crosses the Santa Cruz River; Huextetitla over the Xiliatl River; and Tlacuilola to cross the tributary of the same name, the analysis details.

As well as Las Limas II over the Xococapa River; Chapulhuacanito, which crosses the tributary of the same name; Laurel over the Ladera body of water; and Huhuetzintla over the Lalaxtitla River.

The existing bridges in San Pedro will be modernized to cross the river of the same name; Limantitla, which will cross a tributary that does not have a name; and Los Patos, which crosses the body of water of the same name.

The interchanges to be built are Acuapa, between the towns of Macuxtepetla, Acuapa, and Xocotitla; as well as Huejutla, in the town of El Chote; and at kilometers 31-495 to bypass the urban area of the town of Chapulhuacanito; and also at kilometers 34-645, which connects to the Huhuetzintla Bridge.

No disruption to traffic

The statement details that this project requires authorization for land use change under the Forestry Law, as vegetation will be removed. It specifies that the expansion will be carried out exclusively on one shoulder of the existing highway to avoid damaging additional areas and to minimize impacts to road users, as the work will not disrupt traffic.

The SICT justifies the work by pointing out that it will impact the main connectivity routes between Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí, and that the average daily traffic has been exceeded due to the characteristics of the current highway.

According to the project, the municipalities where the road will be built have a high degree of marginalization at the state level, as well as a medium-high level at the municipal level. Therefore, it is considered that the project will improve access to the most disadvantaged localities, favor an increase in economic growth, and incentivize public services.

The SICT continues the Tamazunchale-Huejutla and Ciudad Valles-Tampico highways, part of the Pachuca-Tampico axis. This year, the federal agency will build a total of 30 kilometers: 10 corresponding to San Luis Potosí and 20 to the state of Hidalgo.

It aims to avoid social conflicts by compensating the owners of the land used for the construction of the project, according to the federal agency.

“The development of the project demonstrates that it will not compromise biodiversity, nor will it cause soil erosion or deteriorate water quality and its catchment areas. On the contrary, it is a necessary element to reduce accidents on this stretch of road, in addition to increasing and improving connectivity in this busy and busy area,” the analysis concludes.
