Corpus Christi: a celebration of devotion, faith, and community in San Cristóbal

Corpus Christi (Body of Christ), also known as the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, is a feast of the Catholic Church dedicated to the celebration of the Eucharist. Its main objective is to proclaim and strengthen the faith of believers in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

For 2025, the celebration will take place on Thursday, June 19, and the Bishop of the Diocese of San Cristóbal, Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez, invites parishioners to actively participate in this great religious feast, both in various churches in the city of San Cristóbal and in other parishes in the diocese.

Regarding this, the prelate, in an interview, explained that the main celebration will take place in the Cathedral of San Cristóbal, although it will also be held in other churches in the city. In some parishes, a procession through the streets is organized, while in others only the Eucharist is celebrated. Therefore, he called on Catholics to attend Mass and venerate the Blessed Sacrament, emphasizing that various religious activities will take place throughout the day.

In the city of San Cristóbal, very low citizen participation has been recorded due to uncertainty and distrust among the population.
“Corpus Christi, its meaning is a feast that is celebrated in ordinary time liturgically. It also celebrates devotion, and that people may have the body and blood of Christ. Corpus Christi is Latin for “Body of Christ.” We know that Jesus instituted the Eucharist with the bread and wine of the Last Supper, and that he transformed the meaning of that Last Supper as the Eucharist. Since then, we celebrate the Body of Christ, who gave himself for us; his blood was shed for us for our salvation,” he noted.

Finally, the bishop reminded parishioners that on Thursday, June 19, parishioners will carry out religious activities inside and outside churches. Additionally, as part of local tradition, the San Cristóbal candy makers will hold a craft candy exhibition in the city center, featuring more than 120 flavors, handcrafted by professional women.
