A devastating accident occurred early Sunday morning in the Emiliano Zapata Sur III neighborhood of Mérida, Yucatán, when a patrol car driven by a state police officer lost control and crashed into a wall before overturning onto the sidewalk.

The incident took place around 2:40 a.m. on 88-A Street between 161st and 163rd Streets in the capital city’s south region. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the patrol car, a 2022 Ford Ranger pickup truck, dozed off while patrolling, resulting in loss of control and a head-on collision with the wall of a home.

The impact was severe, causing approximately two meters of the wall to collapse before the patrol car came to rest on its right side. Miraculously, both police officers on board suffered only bruises and were treated on-site by paramedics from the Y-54 ambulance.

The Ministry of Public Security has stated that the damage to the property and the vehicle will be covered under the institutional protocol for such incidents, which includes compensation through the relevant insurance company.

Traffic officers cordoned off the area while work was carried out to remove the damaged patrol car and clear the road. The authorities have not yet announced whether an internal investigation will be launched to determine possible sanctions against the driver for negligence.
