Tamaulipas advances in gender identity reform

7

Representatives of the Tamaulipas Congress spoke in favor of the Gender Identity Law, and the initiative was referred to the Joint Committees of Justice and Legislative Studies for study and preparation of the corresponding opinion. Tamaulipas becomes the 26th state in the country to approve the reform.

Before the session, members of the LGBTTTIQ+ community demonstrated in favor of its prompt approval at the entrance to the parliamentary chamber.

Morena representative Cinthia Elizabeth Jaime Castillo presented the initiative from the podium, which was joined by other representatives. The initiative includes protecting people from homophobic and transphobic violence, preventing torture, and preventing cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of people.

In which states has the Gender Identity reform been approved?

He explained that “to date, 25 states in the Republic have adopted reforms to recognize and protect trans people when they wish to change their gender identity.” These include:

Mexico City
Michoacán
Nayarit
Coahuila
Colima
San Luis Potosí
Sonora, Puebla
Baja California/Baja California Sur
Sinaloa
Zacatecas
Quintana Roo

Remember that in Tamaulipas, there was a delay in this reform, and it was only announced that the petition would be analyzed and the state legislature could include it on its parliamentary agenda.

He mentioned that in Mexico City, in 2015, a reform was passed in favor of trans people, thanks to which gender recognition and identity ceased to be a judicial process and became an administrative procedure.

“The lack of official documents that reflect gender identity can lead to discrimination and violence in everyday settings such as employment, education, and healthcare.”
