TRAGEDY IN MÉRIDA: Teacher Slain by Taxi Driver, Man Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicide

A shocking double tragedy has struck the city of Mérida after the bodies of a 56-year-old teacher and a taxi driver were found in separate locations on June 10. The incident has left police investigators scrambling to piece together the events surrounding the tragic events.

According to eyewitnesses, Carmen Yanitza Hernández de Flores, a local teacher, was shot and killed by Dixon Javier Zambrano, a taxi driver who allegedly intercepted her near Ananías Avendaño Elementary School in the El Llano parish. The motive behind the attack is still unclear, but witnesses reported that there was an argument between the two prior to the shooting.

The suspect then reportedly took his own life in a secluded area of the Tovar neighborhood, where his body was later found by authorities. A firearm was discovered near Hernández’s body, which has been handed over to the CICPC (Civic Police Unit) for further investigation.

Hernández, who lived in the San José de Tovar neighborhood, had been on her way home from buying groceries when she was brutally gunned down by Zambrano. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many neighbors expressing their outrage and sadness at the senseless tragedy.
