A strong storm hit Wednesday night, causing severe damage to various parts of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, with Zapopan being the municipality hardest hit by the heavy rains.

Tonight’s rain reportedly caused the first death of the storm. A landslide in the Colimilla ravine crushed a minor, causing his death. Firefighters from Tonalá are already mobilizing to determine if there are any more victims.

Severe local rains also caused severe damage in the municipalities of Tequila and Ocotlán, with strong wind gusts and flooding.

In Zapopan, municipal authorities responded to at least seven incidents of flooding on public roads. The most affected areas were Plaza del Sol, where the water level reached up to 90 centimeters; Tesistán Avenue and Acueducto in Jardines del Valle, with 80 centimeters; and the Hidalgo Street overpass in La Magdalena, which reported 55 centimeters of accumulation. Damage was also reported in La Estancia, Nuevo México, Villa de los Belenes, and Bugambilias.

At least four reports of water entering homes were also recorded, primarily in the Jardines de Nuevo México, Valle Imperial, Hogares de Nuevo México, and Alhambra neighborhoods. In all cases, water levels ranged between 15 and 20 centimeters.

Regarding affected vehicles, four incidents were documented, three of which were stranded in flooded areas and one with people trapped inside in Santa Ana Tepetitlán, at the intersection of Aldama and Leona Vicario.

Fallen trees were also reported in three locations: on Prolongación Mariano Otero and Paseo del Bosque (Natura neighborhood) in Nuevo México, and in the Arboledas neighborhood, at the intersection of Galileo Galilei and Virgen streets.

The neighborhoods most affected by the storm were Jardines de Nuevo México, Nuevo México, Valle Imperial, Alhambra, Ciudad del Sol, La Estancia, Jardines del Valle, La Magdalena, and Santa Ana Tepetitlán.

In Tlajomulco, the situation was similar. In San Sebastián, the flooding caused the canal located at the entrance to the town to overflow, while another canal collapsed in the La Guantera area. Overflows were also reported in Adolf Horn, near the El Zapote canal and the Maseca company.

Other roads affected by flooding included Colón and Isla Raza, the old highway to Tesistán, the highway to Nogales, and several sections of the South Central area, where a street connecting San Sebastián with Santa María was completely flooded. Traffic was also closed on Lázaro Cárdenas and Mariano Otero, below the Millennium Arches, due to high water levels.

Authorities continue dredging and monitoring of risk points in anticipation of the possibility of further rain overnight.
