President Donald Trump’s administration officially announced yesterday that applicants for US visas to study in the United States will be required to make their social media accounts public. But what types of visas does this measure apply to?
The US State Department indicated that a thorough evaluation, including the online presence, will be conducted for students and exchange visitors in the F, M, and J classifications.
“To facilitate this evaluation, all applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas will be instructed to adjust the privacy settings of all their social media profiles to ‘public,'” the US agency stated in a statement.
Which F, M, and J visas must make their social media accounts public?
The State Department indicates that the student visas are the F and M, which are used to enter the United States to study at:
F visa: to study at a university or college, secondary school, elementary school, seminary, conservatory, or academic institution with a language training program.
M visa: For studies at a non-recognized vocational institution or other academy.
J visa: These are visas for exchange programs, to which doctors, professors, researchers, fellows, specialists, students, teachers, and apprentices can apply.
The United States will resume new student visa appointments.
The Department of State also indicated that consulates and embassies will resume scheduling F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas, so it is recommended that you check appointment availability.
