While central and southern Mexico are experiencing heavy rains, the reality in the north is different: the drought continues unabated. According to the latest report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) for May 2025, several states in the north of the country, such as Baja California, are experiencing critical drought conditions, just as other regions are facing torrential rains and thunderstorms.

Which Mexican states are experiencing 100% drought?

As of the latest SMN report, five Mexican states report 100% of their territory affected by drought:

Baja California
Baja California Sur
Chihuahua
Sinaloa
Sonora

In these cases, no region is immune to the impact of drought, and the recorded levels range from abnormally dry (D0) to exceptional drought (D4). For example, in Baja California, 0.8% of the territory is already in category D4, the most severe, while in Baja California Sur, 11.9% is experiencing severe drought (D2).

Furthermore, the state of Durango is also facing a critical situation, with 87% of its territory affected by some degree of drought.

The aforementioned Mexico Drought Monitor revealed that 40.3% of the national territory is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought conditions (D1 to D4). This situation severely impacts nearly 400 municipalities, primarily in the north and northwest of the country, where water stress is already jeopardizing crops, livestock, and drinking water supplies.
