Cozumel’s Future at Risk: Community Rallies Against Fourth Cruise Ship Pier

2

A proposal to construct a fourth cruise ship pier in Cozumel has sparked widespread concern among environmentalists and residents over the potential ecological damage it could cause to the Villa Blanca Reef, a unique marine ecosystem on the island. The project, led by Muelles del Caribe S.A. de C.V., aims to accommodate state-of-the-art cruise ships in the area.

The proposal has prompted a surge of protests on social media, with activists calling for the cancellation of the project under the slogan “No to the Fourth Pier.” However, business leaders have countered with an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that suggests the project will not harm the ecosystem. Critics argue that this information is misleading and do not reflect the true extent of the potential damage.

The Villa Blanca Reef is home to a type of coral that has limited reproductive capabilities, making it particularly vulnerable to human impact. This has led environmentalists to sound the alarm and call on civil society to join their efforts to prevent the construction of the pier.

In an effort to raise awareness and funds to cancel the project, community members have launched a fundraising initiative, with over 350,000 pesos (approximately 48% of the goal) already raised. The campaign is urging individuals to contribute to the cause and join the movement against the fourth cruise ship pier.
