The Secretariat for Agricultural and Rural Development (Sefader) of the state of Oaxaca reported the first case of screwworm myiasis in a dog.
The case was found in the municipality of San Juan Yaeé, in the Sierra Norte region, where the animal was detected, treated, and cured to prevent the parasite from spreading to other related species, the agency confirmed.
Sefader called on the population to be vigilant “in the event of the presence or suspicion of screwworm in any of their animals, whether livestock or domestic animals.”
According to the agency’s reports, 26 cases have been recorded in the state, primarily in cattle, and the most recent case in a dog.
The first case of screwworm myiasis in the state was reported last April in a horse in the municipality of Matías Romero.
Sefader urged the public to report signs of this disease to the Oaxaca State Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Livestock (CEFPPO) or to the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica), at 951 109 8090 and 951 501 6900, extension 25782.
