Junior H’s concert, scheduled for June 20 in Yautepec, Morelos, has been canceled. According to a statement from the artist, it was the decision of Margarita Gonzáles Saravia’s government because he allegedly sings “war corridos.”
In the same statement, the event promoter defends the singer, arguing that the governor’s judgment is incorrect, as Junior H has “his own musical style” and authorities had been previously informed that the concert would not include narcocorridos.
The statement also states that the government’s decision violates Junior H’s right to express himself through his music.
In addition, Junior H posted several posts on his social media where he lamented what happened and lashed out at the government:
“I’m so sorry, Cuernavaca. This is out of my control. If I had the opportunity to advocate for this, I would. But I’m just an artist, and I don’t know why they’re doing this to us and to you, because it’s because you’re the reason we’re here.”
He also added: “It was beautiful to see how Mexican artists were rising and putting our legacy at the top, in everyone’s eyes. But thanks to our f…ing government, we’re screwed.”
Finally, Junior H assured that he will soon prove that he’s not limited to singing corridos. “Give me a few days,” he expressed.
Refunds will be issued online for those who purchased tickets online, and at the box office starting Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m.
Last April, following the riots that erupted in Texcoco during Luis R. Conríquez’s show, Junior H was interviewed by journalist Tere Aguilar, where he criticized the censorship of certain musical genres imposed by some Mexican states and municipalities, calling these measures “very sad” and “ridiculous.”
The artist defended the “cultural importance” of this musical style, which has been part of the identity of many communities for decades.
In his statements, Junior H lamented that, after so many years of tradition, local authorities are taking action to limit the dissemination of corridos.
According to the performer, this music represents a deep connection with the roots and history of those who listen to and perform it. “It’s very sad that we’ve been playing this music for decades, and they’re just beginning to do this; to me, it’s really ridiculous and very sad, because it’s the music we started with, with the people who know us,” he stated.
