The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor has emerged as a strategic logistics platform six years after its creation, connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico through a rail, port, and industrial logistics platform. This megaproject spans across the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz, aiming to spur private investment, generate jobs, and modernize the infrastructure of the south-southeast region.
According to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Corridor is a recognition of southeastern Mexico’s importance, which has been historically underserved. It provides connectivity between Veracruz and Oaxaca, as well as between the Pacific and Atlantic, offering an alternative to the Panama Canal.
Tabasco plays a key role in the project, with significant progress made on strengthening its rail and port connectivity. The construction of the new Roberto Ayala–Dos Bocas branch line will directly connect the Olmeca Refinery, in the port of Dos Bocas, with the FA Line, which links Coatzacoalcos with Palenque.
This branch will expand the corridor’s logistical coverage, facilitating the transportation of hydrocarbons, industrial goods, and agricultural products from Tabasco to the rest of the country and abroad. The FA Line has been completely rehabilitated, allowing for both cargo and passenger transport.
The Port of Dos Bocas is also poised to become a commercial node, with a multipurpose terminal featuring two berths. Progress is being made in consolidating Development Hubs for Well-being, including eight hubs already awarded concessions. In Tabasco, the industrial hub located in Teapa is currently being sold free of charge by the state government.
President Sheinbaum emphasized that the Interoceanic Corridor will be supervised by the Ministry of the Navy and will move more than 100,000 passengers and 500,000 tons of cargo from both national and international companies. With a total of 14 development hubs planned, the Corridor promises to transform Tabasco and the entire south-southeast region into an unprecedented hub of investment, employment, and global connectivity.
The project’s progress was presented by Octavio Sánchez Guillén, general director of the Interoceanic Corridor, during a recent press conference. He highlighted the state’s strategic position within the Corridor and the significant investments being made to strengthen its rail and port infrastructure.
Overall, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor is poised to revolutionize Southeast Mexico, connecting the region with global markets and transforming it into a hub of investment, employment, and economic growth.
