A thunderstorm, due to its intensity, generated flooding in the city’s main square within minutes.
Around 8:00 PM, the thunderstorm began, with several lightning strikes and loud thunder heard in both the Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo areas.
A few minutes later, the main square, primarily 5 de Mayo Street, was flooded, reaching a depth of 40 centimeters, but by that time all businesses were closed.
At 8:15 PM, Mayor Lizette Tapia Castro posted a video on social media announcing that Zihuatanejo was under yellow alert and urging the public to exercise caution because heavy rain is expected in the coming hours and into Thursday.
She added that she remains closely monitoring the evolution of Category 3 Hurricane Erick at the Civil Protection permanent session.
Municipal Civil Protection Director Jorge Cercantes Álvarez said heavy rain is expected to continue in the coming hours in Zihuatanejo and reported that a shelter with a capacity for 400 people is already open if necessary.
