Eight police officers were caught in Celaya, Guanajuato, attempting to extort gas station employees. Municipal police officers arrived at the scene after receiving a citizen complaint.

According to a message published by the Secretary of Security and Peace of Guanajuato, Juan Mauro González, the officers were detained after receiving a 911 report.

The same statement indicates that the officers are being investigated to clarify the events and “if necessary, punish them according to the law.”

“In this Secretariat, there is no room for those who betray public service. Every action must adhere to the law, professionalism, and unrestricted respect for the rights of the people,” the message concludes.

At a press conference by the Celaya police, it was reported that there were already reports of these acts from 20 days ago, and that thanks to the actions of the municipal police, the crime was stopped before it was committed.

It was also reported that the alleged criminals were not from the area where they were located when they were caught, and that although they were traveling in official state force vehicles, their identification letters were covered up.
