The City Council meeting on June 30 saw Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada highlight key advancements in basic infrastructure, urban cleanup, and administrative reorganization. Emphasizing the importance of guaranteeing access to clean water and enhancing public services across the municipality’s precincts and urban areas.
A major breakthrough was announced regarding the Drinking Water Works project, which will combine municipal resources with federal funding from Conagua. This initiative aims to improve eight drinking water systems in various precincts, building on efforts already underway using local resources in at least seven precincts, including Santa Gertrudis Copó, Dzunucán, and San Pedro Chimay.
The mayor stressed that ensuring everyone has access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right and a priority for achieving social justice. She also emphasized the importance of monitoring real estate developers’ connections to the city’s water systems, which can impact pressure and availability for residents.
In addition to the Drinking Water Works project, the City Council has launched a comprehensive program called “Clean Mérida is Yours, Take Care of It,” aimed at maintaining cleanliness in the city. This initiative includes massive cleanup operations, the installation of Mérida Clean Points, and the creation of an Ecological Police force.
The new Ecological Police will be trained to verify compliance with solid waste regulations and support civil judges in enforcing these regulations. The mayor emphasized that maintaining a clean city is essential for public health, environmental protection, and maintaining order in the community.
During the same meeting, it was announced that Brenda Ruz Durán, Municipal DIF Director, has left her position. Mayor Patrón described her as “a compassionate and approachable woman committed to those who needed help most.” Gerardo Jesús López Fernández will take over as new Director of Municipal Public Services on July 1.
Additionally, Luis Jorge Montalvo Duarte was appointed as the new Director of Municipal Public Services, effective July 16. Gilberto Espinosa will remain part of the municipal team in a new role after exceling in infrastructure and citizen services.
