Fifty tourists were trapped underground on the afternoon of Monday, June 30, in the underground river at Xplor Park, after a power outage interrupted the ride within the tourist complex, located in the municipality of Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

According to initial reports, the visitors were stranded inside the attraction’s tunnel after the power supply was cut for more than an hour, with no lighting or way to escape on their own.

A park security team, with support from municipal and state emergency services, rescued everyone, with no injuries reported. However, the incident generated tense moments among those affected, some of whom shared their experience on social media.

A municipal government source confirmed that the situation was under control and nothing serious happened, although the tourist park’s security protocol is being evaluated.

Xcaret issued a statement explaining that its Xplor park experienced a “temporary” power outage inside one of its artificially lit caverns, “which resulted in a few minutes of blackouts during the swimming experience in the underground river.”

Through its social media channels, it stated that “the situation was quickly addressed and operations continued normally” and denied the reports circulating online regarding the incident.
