The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has tightened the eligibility criteria for a TN visa, which allows Mexicans and Canadians in certain professions to work in the country.
According to the USCIS website, the update to the professional categories covered by this type of visa means that several specific jobs have been eliminated from the list, such as computer programmer, market analyst, or financial analyst, in addition to excluding any position involving patient care or clinical support.
Because of this, physicians are now only eligible for a TN visa if they are dedicated exclusively to teaching or research.
Also eliminated are occupations such as mechanic, welder, or electrician, even if they work supporting an engineer, as well as radiology or ultrasound technicians.
Furthermore, in addition to tightening criteria for specific professions, it is now required that academic degrees correspond exactly to the profession to be practiced in the United States. Therefore, degrees indirectly related to the disciplines in which one wishes to work will no longer be accepted.
How much does a TN visa cost for Mexicans?
The TN visa is a nonimmigrant permit that allows citizens of Canada and Mexico to temporarily enter the United States to practice specific professions if they have an invitation in the form of an employment contract from an employer.
It is normally granted for periods of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the required requirements are met. The nonimmigrant visa costs between approximately $160 and $190, according to the U.S. Department of State.
Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, the United States has significantly tightened its immigration policies.
