Urban mobility in the Tamaulipas metropolitan area will be transformed with the construction of a new metrobus system connecting Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira.

The Ministry of Public Works launched the state public bidding process with a budget exceeding 2.6 billion pesos, and includes a large-scale project that will benefit more than 700,000 people in the region.

The project, with folio number LPE-N006-2025, will be one of the most ambitious public transportation projects in the state. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, following the completion of the executive project, which will be developed throughout 2025.

What features will the new metrobus system have in Tamaulipas?

Pedro Cepeda Anaya, head of the Ministry of Public Works, explained that the system will have 33 stations, 26 of which will be double and 7 single, in addition to designated lanes, smart traffic lights, and a technological network for real-time monitoring, fleet control, and electronic toll collection.

“The new system will directly benefit more than 700,000 people in Tampico, Madero, and Altamira,” the official emphasized, adding details and figures about the project, which will be one of the most comprehensive in the state’s mobility history.

347 new buses are expected to operate, of which 36 will be standard 12-meter buses for the main route, 88 for auxiliary routes, and 223 for feeder routes, covering 640 kilometers to connect neighborhoods and outlying areas.

What will the metrobus route be and what areas will it cover?

The corridor will be 15.65 kilometers long in each direction, beginning at the Altamira Terminal and ending in Paso del Humo, in the southern part of Tampico.

The route will include key roads such as Miguel Hidalgo Avenue, the Tampico-Mante Highway, and several streets in Tampico’s Historic Center, including Altamira and Álvaro Obregón.

The construction of two strategic terminals is planned; one will be located in Altamira and will include holding yards, workshops, a 20,000-liter fuel station, and a control center.

The other will be located in Paso del Humo, on the Isleta Pérez in Tampico, a key point for thousands of citizens in northern Veracruz to connect by sea.

How will the metrobus project be financed in the metropolitan area?

It was reported that the Metrobús project will be funded tripartitely, with the National Infrastructure Fund (FONADIN) providing 651.6 million pesos through the Federal Support Program for Mass Transportation (PROTRAM).

For its part, the Tamaulipas government of Américo Villarreal Anaya will invest approximately 924 million pesos, while the private sector will contribute another 1.029 billion pesos.

Although construction will not begin until 2026, the first 40 million pesos will be secured this year to develop the final project.

“This plan represents a structural change in urban mobility in the metropolitan area, aligned with a modern and sustainable vision for public transportation,” Cepeda Anaya stated.
