From July 25th to 27th, the Casa del Caballero Águila (House of the Eagle Knight) located in San Pedro Cholula will open its doors to celebrate the maguey through exhibitions, conferences, and discussions. Specialists and authorities seek to highlight its ritual, medicinal, and productive value.
According to some specialists, there are more than 200 species of maguey, and it is an emblematic plant of Mexico. This plant is used to produce mezcal, as well as pulque, also known as the drink of the gods.
This weekend, the Government of the State of Puebla and the City Council of San Pedro Cholula will hold a series of activities to celebrate the maguey at the Casa del Caballero Águila (House of the Eagle Knight), located in the heart of Cholula.
On July 25th, at 4:00 PM, the exhibition “Maguey: Sacred Treasure of Nature and Culture” will be inaugurated. They will also give a lecture on “Pulque as a Sacred Ritualistic and Ancestral Drink” at 5:00 PM.
The following day at noon, Jesús Cuenca Hernández, researcher, producer, seed farmer, and tlachiquero, will give a lecture on pulque production in the Cholula region and will address the myths and legends of pulque. Fifty minutes later, the researcher and tlachiquero will speak on the “Benefits of pulque and maguey.”
On July 27th, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, experts in maguey and its derivatives will discuss: The resilience of maguey and pulque in the face of adversity; the derivatives and uses of maguey; the differences between tinacales, pulquerías, and homemade pulque; and how to identify an adulterated pulque from a natural one.
