Emphasizing the goal of improving urban mobility and ensuring access to public transportation, the Monterrey government launched Regio Ruta this week, a new free transportation system that begins with five strategic routes, starting with Route D, which connects the Obispado, the Macroplaza, and Fundidora Park.
Mayor Adrián de la Garza led the official launch of the project, which he described as a campaign promise fulfilled and a response to an urgent need among the population. “This service seeks to guarantee the human right to mobility and connect sectors that previously did not have public transportation coverage,” he stated.
Free registration and adaptation period. The service is open to the public and is completely free of charge. Those interested must register on the official website or visit any of the Municipal Service Centers (CAM) to receive an access card. However, the mayor clarified that during the first month of operations, those who are not yet registered will also be able to use it. Additionally, the Regio Ruta mobile app was launched, available for Android and iOS systems, through which users can register, check routes, and obtain updated service information.
“Bus stop service frequencies are approximately every 15 to 20 minutes, and an app was developed to monitor the location of the bus you’re waiting for. All buses have GPS,” the mayor stated in an exclusive interview with Quadratin Nuevo León.
Planned Expansion Starting August 4, the remaining routes will be incorporated, covering the northern and southern areas of the city, including the city center, and serving more than 340 neighborhoods in the metropolitan area. It is estimated that the Regio Ruta will be able to make up to 70,000 trips daily, considering multiple trips per user. Modern and Equipped Fleet The vehicles used on the Regio Ruta are new, Mercedes-Benz vehicles, assembled in Nuevo León.
They are equipped with:
Air conditioning
Wi-Fi connection
Mobile phone chargers
GPS system
Video surveillance cameras connected to the C4
Wheelchair-accessible spaces
Hours and Coverage
The service will operate Monday through Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sundays and holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Each route will have between 33 and 117 stops, clearly identified along the route. The municipality’s total investment in the development of Regio Ruta amounts to 326 million pesos over a 30-month period, which represents an average expenditure of 10 million pesos per month.
“This investment is not minor, but we are convinced that it is necessary to address the high demand for public transportation in the city,” concluded De la Garza. “The northern region has the greatest demand; La Alianza and Valle Verde, because many of the routes that served mass transit were removed there. So we’re going to be closer to their neighborhoods and bring them closer to mass transit like the metro, Transmetro, and Ecovía,” the Monterrey councilor stated.
