The light rail project, which seeks to connect Puebla with the municipalities of Cholula and Atlixco, is in the initial phase of technical studies, so it is not yet possible to determine the total investment required, reported the state’s Secretary of Infrastructure, José Manuel Contreras de los Santos.
In an interview, the official explained that a technical review of the existing rail lines is currently underway and that the progress of this phase is close to 10 percent.
“We are in the phase of analyzing the route and clearing the tracks. If the results are favorable, we can move on to the next phase, as this is a costly project,” Contreras commented.
He explained that the complete study consists of three phases: feasibility, executive design, and viability. The objective is to avoid an investment that does not guarantee functionality or long-term benefits.
Regarding the right-of-way, he indicated that it has already been established, although it will be necessary to evaluate whether it is necessary to add new stations or relocate some. The use of geospatial maps is also planned to define the final route.
The official emphasized that the final decision on the construction of the light rail will depend on the technical results. “We cannot improvise with a project of this scope,” he concluded.
